Not everyone hears the same.
One's ability to hear can be determined by two factors: the ability to perceive the volume's loudness, measured in dB, and the ability to detect different frequencies, measured in Hz. This project caters to those who have difficulty hearing under 70 dB of noise, impacting their ability to listen to verbal communications and smaller noises.

Project Direction Development
This project began with a rapid ideation phase to align with the class design brief. The process was guided by continuous research and validation from our users. The ongoing effort to better understand the user and cultivate empathy resulted in a concept that I chose to pursue.

Born deaf, John joined the Deaf Day school since preschool due to its strong sign language program. With fluency in American Sign Language, he effectively communicated with teachers and faculty, leveraging his first language to enhance English writing.
John excelled in cross country, Varsity Boys' Basketball, Volleyball, Drama Club, and as captain of the academic decathlon team. They competed in the Gallaudet Academic Bowl at both regional and national levels.
John emphasizes the importance of deaf teenagers attending hearing schools for exposure to the hearing world, particularly with interpreters.
Improving communication
The LED panels, which are controlled by the coach, are placed around the Deaf athletes. This allows the athletes to see the panels from multiple directions, making it easier for them to train or compete according to their coach's guidance.

Basketball requires constant communication on and off the court so Deaf athletes use visual cues, such as sign language, numbers, and codes to help them understand their coach’s message. Let us elevate the experience of these athletes by bringing in more helpful visual cues to the court.
